Iterative Fictions [IF] presents new sculpture, sound, and mixed-reality artworks that animate objects from the Weeksville Heritage Center’s collection. The concept of 'iterative fiction' highlights stories revisited and reshaped across cycles, urging us to consider the narrative potential of objects through past and future iterations.
The exhibition marks the culmination of my Artist-in-Residence tenure at Weeksville Heritage Center, where I had direct access to the archival collection. I spent time sifting through and looking closely at objects and historical texts in a manner reminiscent of my time spent crate digging for vinyl records. This process inspired me to create artworks that spark reflections on selfhood, personhood, and heritage. Simultaneously, I explore questions about how art and technology influence our perception of history and how, in turn, we shape it. What does it mean to animate old magazine and comic book covers? How do past social and political issues mash-up with present concerns?
[IF] extends beyond the gallery, integrating augmented reality installations throughout Weeksville Heritage Center’s grounds and featuring Ughegbe (Mirror) # Now, a sculptural installation positioned outside on the north lawn. Reflection here unfolds as both introspection and surface perception. When we peer into the materials of [IF]—whether physical or intangible—we encounter slivers of history that compel us to see ourselves within these stories. In contemplating this reflection, we reckon with how deeply these histories intertwine with their identities. If we keep looking, what else will we find?
